Teacher or Administrator Referral - many times students are referred for short term services when they seem to have difficulty adapting to the educational environment and disclose details that are best suited for individual discussions. These services consist of up to five sessions throughout the school year. Any student requiring more services will be referred to the Problem Solving Team for inclusion in a small group intervention. Parent permission is required to attend such groups. In addition, sometimes students require support services outside the scope of the educational setting to address problems or issues. In these instances, an outside referral to a community based support service is made to the parents.
Parent Referral - parents can also request that the counselor or social worker check in with their child regarding academic or social-emotional issues occurring in the learning environment. Issues including school adjustment and anxiety, separation anxiety, bullying, or personal issues that may manifest during the school day.
Self-Referral - any student can ask their classroom teacher to see the school counselor or social worker. The teacher will then pass this request along to me and I will arrange to see the student at my earliest opportunity. Teachers may try to assess the gravity of the situation by asking for a bit more detail.
Problem Solving Process - students who exhibit academic, emotional or behavioral issues despite short term interventions may be referred to the Problem Solving Team (PST), a multi-disciplined group of professionals, including the child's teacher, school psychologist, an administrator, special education teacher, and the counselor/social worker. The team discusses as a group what intervention(s) may best lead to student growth and progress. At times, a small group counseling intervention will be implemented to help teach and encourage the student's success in the identified area. Parent notification and permission is required. This process may also be referred to as a Tier 2 or Tier 3 intervention.
Character Education - all students in all grade levels will receive a series of classroom based guidance lessons. These lessons help students develop and practice strong positive character traits such as self-awareness and self-management skills, social awareness and interpersonal skills, and decision making skills and responsible behaviors across environments. These lessons promote the Social-Emotional Learning standards developed by Illinois State Board of Education.
Universal Screening Process - Spaulding School uses BESSTweb to assess and track all students on behavioral and emotional competency. Much like our MAP, the BESSTweb requires classroom teachers to identify and rate students on concerning externalizing and internalizing behaviors. These behaviors screened for have been found to be good predictors of children with mild to moderate impairment who would benefit from a support intervention. Extensive research tells us that when children are feeling emotionally balanced and supported, they are able to achieve more academically.
